MAHPERD Awards Criteria

Joseph McKenney Award (Contact Cindy Coughlin, 109 Nottingham Drive, East Longmeadow, MA 01028)*

1. The highest award the Association can bestow on a member in recognition of distinguished service to one or more of the professions in the Association. Only one such award can be presented annually.
2. The award is presented for exemplary service, leadership, and contributions to the profession, MAHPERD and the youth of the state.
3. The recipient should reflect the spirit of devoted service to the profession and creative leadership in the field.
4. The recipient must have held membership with MAHPERD and AAHPERD for at least ten years.

Honor Awards (Contact Cindy Coughlin, 109 Nottingham Drive, East Longmeadow, MA 01028)*

1. Candidates should be a Health, Physical Education, Recreation or Dance professional whose life and contributions have inspired youth of the state within the field.
2. Candidates must be a member of MAHPERD.
3. Candidate shall have demonstrated outstanding ability as a teacher, practitioner or administrator in the field.
4. Candidates shall have contributed to the profession through one or more of the following ways: publications, speeches, demonstrations, appearance on professional programs, committee service, or serving as an officer in a professional association.

Physical Education Teacher of the Year (TOY) (Contact Barbi Kelley, 27 Newton Road, Westminster, MA 01473)*

A Physical Educator is defined for the purposes of these awards as an individual who has major responsibility for teaching Physical Education in grades K-12 for a specific school system. The teacher must be a person who

1 . Has a minimum of a 5 years teaching experience in Physical Education.
2. Conducts a balanced and sequential curriculum that reflects an understanding of child growth and development.
3. Utilizes various teaching methodologies and plans innovative learning experiences to meet the needs of all.
4. Serves as a positive role model epitomizing personal health and fitness, enjoyment of activity, sportsmanship, and sensitivity to the needs of students.
5. Participates in professional development opportunities.
6. Serves on state/district/national committees and/or presents at workshops or programs at these sites.
7. Current member of MAHPERD and AAHPERD/NASPE.
8. A full-time teaching contract and certification in Physical Education with a minimum of 60% of total teaching responsibility in teaching Physical Education.

RULES FOR NOMINATION/APPLICATION

1 . Any Physical Educator who meets the eligibility requirements and exemplifies the criteria may apply, or be nominated by a colleague.
2. Teachers may have responsibility for teaching grades which cross different levels, but applications should be submitted for the level which represents 50% or more of their Physical Education teaching assignment.
3. Nominations must be submitted typewritten, following the format for applications.

Health Teacher of the Year (Contact, Suanne Maurer-Starks, 25 Ivy Lane, Milford, MA 01757)*
The purpose of the Health Award is to publicly recognize an outstanding Hands-on practitioner who has made valuable contributions in the area of HEALTH. Nominees must meet the following criteria:

1. Be currently teaching in the field of Health.
2. Be a member of MAHPERD.
3. Have been in the Health profession for a minimum of 5 years.
4. Have contributed to the profession through one or more of the following ways: publications, speeches, demonstrations, appearance on professional programs, committee service, serving as an officer of a professional Association.

Pathfinder Award (Contact Shannon Komow, 34 Noble Street, Newton, MA 02465)*

The Pathfinder Award is given to a person who has made outstanding contributions and shown great commitment to girls' and women's athletics.

Amelia Riou Award (Contact Marianne Cameron, 81 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472)*

The nominee should: Be currently teaching Adapted Physical Education (for a minimum of 5 years), be a MAHPERD member and have contributed to the profession through one or more of the following ways: publication, speeches, demonstrations, appearance on professional programs, committee service, serving as an officer of a professional association.

Dance Educator of the Year (Contact Cindy Coughlin, 109 Nottingham Drive, East Longmeadow, MA 01028)*

The purpose of the Dance Teacher of the Year Award is to publically recognize an outstanding recognize an outstanding "Hands-on" practicioner who has made valuable contributions in the area of dance. Nominees must meet the following criteria:

1. Be currently teaching in the field of dance.
2. Be a member of MAHPERD
3. Have been in the dance profession for a minimum of 5 years.
4. Have contributed to the profession through one or more of the following ways: publications, speeches, demonstrations, appearance on professional programs, committee service, serving as an officer of a professional association.
