Job Title:  Physical Education Specialist (1 position open per level for Elem, MS, HS)

Background
Boston Public Schools has received funding from The Carol White Physical Education Program (PEP) to implement the Boston on the Move Project.
Duties and Responsibilities

The Physical Education Specialist is responsible for implementing a physical education program in up to six schools that currently have no program, assessing student activity levels and collecting data for the program evaluation, and attending  Boston on the Move training and professional development sessions. 
 
Minimum Qualifications
o Candidate must have experience in teaching physical education.
o Hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License in Physical Education
o Commitment to the PE as an important element in a complete education.
o Experience using computers for record keeping and for communication
o Experience working with diverse populations in urban setting
o Meet all state and federal guidelines in order to be fully licensed and "Highly Qualified" according to NCLB.
o Education:  Hold a Bachelors degree.
o Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

Qualifications--Preferred:
o Three years teaching experience, preferably in an urban school setting.
o Masters Degree or equivalent thereof in PE.

Instructional Coaches

The Boston Public Schools (BPS) and Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) recently secured funding from CDC's Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) which, in combination with several other grants, will enable BPS to work on aggressive, high impact policy, systems, and environmental change initiatives to prevent chronic disease in Boston. 

Position Summary and General Responsibilities
The Instructional Coach will work with the regular Physical Education (PE) teachers at the elementary level to support their implementation of the newly adopted SPARK-PE curriculum and FITNESSGRAM assessment program.  The Coach will work directly with teachers in schools that offer PE by modeling high quality instruction in a variety of formats, offering collaborative and one-on-one coaching, and facilitating related professional development. The Coach will focus on enhancing teachers' ability to provide PE instruction utilizing SPARK, and enable teachers to successfully track and report student fitness through use of FITNESSGRAM.  Using the structures of Collaborative Coaching and Learning (CCL) and classroom based coaching, the coach will work as a colleague with PE teachers in small groups and one-on-one to expand and refine their improved practice.

The Coach will also assist and support schools in their integration of physical activity into the school day; and work with administrators and teachers to align their work with district priorities regarding both physical education and activity.
 
Qualifications
Required:
 Bachelor's Degree in physical education with 5 plus years of teaching experience and demonstrated expertise in PE
 Massachusetts Teaching License in PE
 Experience training or coaching elementary teachers in the area of PE
 Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills with demonstrated ability to implement professional development and motivate follow-through
 Strong interpersonal skills to share proven instructional approaches with teachers and administrators and provide advice and coaching
 Ability to plan strategically and implement all the components of the Collaborative Coaching and Learning (CCL) model
 Strong organizational skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines
 Experience working with a diverse adult and student population
 Ability to travel between multiple school sites and work on a flexible schedule

Preferred:
 Master's Degree with 3-5 years classroom teaching experience
 Experience working as an Instructional Coach
 Experience working in a large school district, especially BPS
 Knowledge of adult learning theory

High School Instructional Coach

Position Summary and General Responsibilities
The Instructional Coach will support high school Physical Education (PE) teachers in their delivery of standards-based curriculum for all students. This work will be guided by a thoughtful analysis of current PE programming at the secondary level, review of assessment and school data to identify strengths across the district as well as areas for improvement.  The Coach will collaborate with PE teachers to evaluate, identify, and implement standards-based curricula and programs that align with district frameworks and provide students with an excellent transition from the K-8 Spark-PE program. 

The High School Instructional Coach will utilize a variety of practices, including the structures of Collaborative Coaching and Learning (CCL) to sustain the improved practice and teaching methods among PE teachers, with the particular goal of increasing moderate-to-vigorous physical activity among students, improving PE offerings that promote lifelong fitness, and implementing regular fitness assessments for students in order to assess impact of systematic changes.  The Coach will also assist and support schools in their integration of physical activity into the school day; and work with administrators and teachers to align their work with district priorities and mandates.

Physical Activity and Program Specialist

Job Title: Physical Activity Policy and Program Specialist
Period of Service: Sept 1, 2010 - March 2012

Position Summary and General Responsibilities
The Physical Activity Policy and Program Specialist will work closely with the Wellness Directors and other division staff to implement policies, programs and strategies that integrate movement across the school day.  The specialist will identify and disseminate materials, provide training to school teachers and staff, monitor implementation of physical activity strategies, recommend school-level physical activity policy options and evaluate systematic changes.
 
Qualifications
 Bachelor's degree in health education, exercise science, community health or related field with 2-3 years related work experience
 Knowledge of physical activity and obesity prevention strategies and interventions
 Experience implementing school or community-based physical activity or public health programs, especially within large school districts
 Knowledge of policies or policy interventions regarding physical activity in schools
 Ability to collaborate with community agencies on the implementation of program and professional development initiatives
 Strong organizational skills and record-keeping
 Self-directed individual with excellent oral and written communication skills
 Detail oriented with excellent follow-through
 Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment and to operate efficiently within tight time-frames
 Ability to develop strong working relationships with co-workers, school staff, and community agencies
 Creativity, flexibility and positive attitude

Harvard Prevention Research Center on Nutrition and Physical Activity

Harvard Prevention Research Center is looking for research assistants from the end of August till the middle of November to help collect data on physical activity and nutrition at afterschool programs in Boston.

Duties: 

  • Travel to/from afterschool programs across the city of Boston
  • Assist in consenting parents and assenting children ages 5-12
  • Conduct observations at afterschool sites
  • Assist with placing accelerometers on students

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree preferred; some education and experience beyond high school required
  • Access to personal vehicle preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively with project staff and school contacts, including children
  • Spanish, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese and/or Portuguese language skills preferred but not required

Hours are approximately 1:30-6:30 pm, M-F, temporary position
Rate: starting at $12/hr, dependent on experience and qualifications
